Outfit repeating?! *gasp*

The article Professor D briefly mentioned in class on Monday about a woman who was criticized for her hair that also discussed who women are held to a higher standard of appearance than men reminded me of a story I heard in the news a few months back. There were many articles written about the story (like this one: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/11/17/a-man-wore-the-same-suit-on-tv-almost-every-day-for-a-year-nobody-cared/) that talk about the Australian newscaster who wore the same exact suit on air every day for a year without anyone noticing or criticizing him for this unusual decision. The man, Karl Stefanovic, did this to show the large double standard that exists in the television and entertainment industry. He believes that if he were a woman, or that if his female co-anchor had done the same she would have been heavily criticized for her choice, yet he received none. Although there are some pressures on men in the entertainment industry, this along with many other instances prove how much different it is for men and women. Like the woman whose hair was criticized, success for women in these industries often requires a certain level of physical attractiveness. These pressures on women are an extremely unfortunate of the culture we live in, and it will take much more than a man committing the social crime of “outfit repeating” to change it.
