The Modern Woman

When those familiar with fashion or popular culture hear “Chanel”, words such as elegance, style and class spring to mind. The classic Chanel 2.55 handbag has been the reigning “it accessory” for countless seasons. While coveted by many, it can be obtained only by a select few: the hardworking, rich or celebrity. This bag subtly tucked under a woman’s arm, with its signature quilted lambskin leather and sparkling interlocking double C signifies one’s “arrival”. Surely the woman carrying this handbag is a success.
The price of a Chanel flap bag has tripled in the past decade. In 2005, one could have the bag for a now meager $1,650. The same luxurious bag retails today for a whopping $4,900, an increase greater than inflation! Yet, loyal Chanel customers are more than willing to part with the cash to get their hands on the timeless staple.
How is it possible for Chanel to command such a steep price? The key selling point, is the aspiration embodied in Coco Chanel herself. Coco Before Chanel explores the unique life of the woman behind the fashion powerhouse. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, overcame what those of her time considered to be unfortunate and detrimental social and economic circumstances, to lead the 20th century woman into a new era. In the last century, not only was the traditional role of women questioned but so was what she wore. Corsets were loosened and the image of what was feminine under Coco’s influence modernized from glut to simplicity. Coco did so, while never swaying from her elegance and with a little romance, a picturesque tale of the Frenchwoman.

A Chanel customer, by sporting the instantly recognizable, exclusive logo, can too be like Coco Chanel. To be like Coco is to be a mysterious, powerful, influential, self-sufficient woman who can achieve success through her own making. Carrying the 2.55 handbag advocates Coco Chanel’s message of success, freedom, and style: the definition of the modern woman.

  1. This is particularly true for the woman who has the means to purchase that handbag through her own earnings, right?!
